Attys. Lucas and Michal Visit Clients and Address Audiences in Japan

Lucas & Mercanti, LLP partners Donald Lucas and Robert Michal visited Japan recently to confer with clients and to address professional audiences in Tokyo and Nagoya.  Lucas & Mercanti has handled thousands of matters in patent and trademark matters for many of Japan’s leading companies.

The seminar at the U.S. Consulate in Nagoya was at the invitation of officials based there. The other program, held in Tokyo, was arranged by leaders of INFOPAT, the international organization devoted to the advancement of patent laws and practice.

The two Lucas & Mercanti lawyers were accompanied by the firm’s native Japanese speaking administrative assistant, Asuka Tina Yanagida, who served as translator – underscoring the firm’s facility in handling communications and legal documents in Japanese. In fact, several of our lawyers and staff are similarly fluent in Chinese, Korean, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch.

The program in Nagoya, titled ADVANCED APPROACHES TO U.S. PATENT LAW FOR JAPANESE COMPANIES, reached officials and corporate counsel whose number of pending U.S. patent applications collectively exceed 4,000. The presentation and all collateral materials were all prepared in Japanese.

The content covered a variety of recent developments in the law including expediting patent processes in the United States, impact of new initiatives on the USPTO, evolving standards for inequitable conduct and full disclosure, double patenting, U.S. provisional patents, design patents, and the BILSKI decision.

The program in Nagoya occurred just two days before the devastating earthquake and tsunami that recently struck Japan. We continue to offer our thoughts and prayers to so many of our clients, colleagues and friends affected by this profound tragedy.

Lucas & Mercanti is looking forward to replicating these educational programs and welcomes the active involvement of our colleagues.
